Larry's Tip of The Week
Do you rent an apartment, a room or a home? Do you rent a mobile or manufactured home. What would you do if there were a fire or robbery to your home. You could loose everything.
Do you have renters insurance? According to the Business Journal, in the current housing crisis, a growing number of people are renting nationwide. According to an online survey by Allstate insurance, conducted between may and June of 2008, renters nationally are not adequately prepared for a disaster. The survey showed that 52% of renters in Houston did not have renters insurance. In Houston 61% of renters have not done a home inventory check list or tried to estimate the cost of replacing everything in their home. In Dallas Ft. Worth and Austin, only about 40% of renters had renters insurance. These numbers typify the trend across the U.S.
Most renters make the mistake of relying on the landlords insurance policy to protect them. However, A landlords policy will not cover your personal belongings. In fact the average renter has $20,000 or more of personal property.
If you are a renter here is why you need renters insurance:
1. Renters insurance will protect you personal belongings and give you piece of mind.
2. You never know when there might be a fire or a robbery. You want to believe you would never be a victim but there is always that chance and the cost to replace everything can be costly.
Renters insurance is relatively cheap. You can get $30,000 in coverage for around $200 per year. premises. This also includes items stolen from your automobile. The policy also includes $100,000 of personal property if you were sued because someone got hurt on the premises.
How much would it cost to replace everything you own. People t tend to underestimate the true value of all there personal property and what it would cost to replace at today’s cost.
Taking stock of your personal possessions is often a wake up call. You need to have a written record of you belongings particularly if you own some expensive items. A home inventory will do the trick. A room by room video inventory with voice over describing the brand and model of the items will do.
I also recommend the free home inventory download which we provide a link to on our website.
